The Bucket Hat Hack
26 November 2025To celebrate the arrival of our Japanese wool fleece we are sharing a hack to turn our Bucket Hat pattern into this snug, turned-up design. The Japanese fleece is incredibly soft and warm, and the knit offers stretch for comfort, but this could also be made with any light to mid-weight fabric with a slight stretch.
This is a simple make using little fabric, and different varieties can be created using contrasting fabrics and colours for the brim.
To create this hack, we have altered the brim piece to create a snug brim that will hug the head when turned up. Below is an illustration of how to adapt the Bucket Hat brim piece, with the original brim piece illustrated in black and the hack guide and the measurements shown in red. Simply trace out a brim piece using the guide, with a shorter width and a shallower curve.

You can follow the Bucket Hat Maker’s Guide instructions except for the following alterations-
-Firstly, print and assemble our free Bucket Hat Pattern. Then use the above guide to alter the brim piece so that it has a shorter width and a shallower curve.
-In Step 2 of the Maker's Guide, the brim piece should be cut x2 pairs in self.
-In Steps 4 & 7, treat one pair of brim pieces as lining when assembling the hat. Bear in mind the lining brim piece will become the outer brim once turned up.
-In Step 10 simply hand stitch the seam gap closed and your hat is complete.
We hope you enjoy this hack. x
