Free Pattern - The Sailor's Collar
18 September 2025These sailor’s collars are inspired by a vintage collection we’ve had for many years. Back during our time in Soho, our friend Fiongal replicated these collars using off-cuts from the store, and they were so popular in the shop. Fiongal was a talented maker and designer, and an incredibly creative person, and this pattern is made in loving memory of him.
These collars are perfect for wearing over shirts and jumpers. Fastened with a ribbon tie and featuring a crescent insert at the back of the neck. Ribbons can be sewn-on to create nautical stripes, or piping can be sandwiched along the edges for subtle details. An embroidered initial would be a lovely addition to personalise the collar, making a great present.

We have compiled a free sewing pattern and maker's guide which is now available online to download and print. As always, the pattern is made in collaboration with the extremely talented Natasha Hua @nhua_design.
FABRIC SUGGESTIONS
This collar works well in light to medium-weight fabrics, structured enough to sit neatly yet soft against the neckline. Lightweight denims and chambrays are a casual take on the sailor’s heritage, while soft shirting canvas and heavier Japanese canvas offer uniformity. Soft linens will give a gentler drape, and in cooler months, lightweight wools and Japanese wool & linen blends will add warmth. If using heavier cloths such as canvas or drill, finish the neckline with a light cotton facing for comfort.
